The Thick of It and beyond
Scanlan first became widely known for playing Terri Coverley, the world-weary head of communications, in the political satire The Thick of It (2005–2012). She went on to further television roles including No Offence and Getting On, the BBC comedy-drama she also co-wrote, drawing on her own earlier career working in the NHS and higher education before she moved into acting and writing full-time.
After Love
In 2020, Scanlan won widespread critical acclaim for her leading role in the film After Love, playing a widow who discovers her late husband's secret double life. The performance won her the BAFTA for Best Leading Actress in 2021, a career high point for an actress who had spent years largely in supporting and character roles.
